Yesterday, Pumpkin had orientation for her second grade class. First off,I was really nervous because I couldn’t even figure out what her teacher’s name was. One of the important people in my daughter’s life this year and I can’t figure out her name. It’s an awful feeling. And if you said it wrong would she take that out on my child. Probably not but you never know. This is my baby so the mind wonders.
Pumpkin has a pretty much brand new teacher. She’s been teaching for two years now. TWO years. I thought “oh boy here we go when I saw her”. She’s this cute little girl. Ok guys..come on.. anyone that looks to me to be in their early twenties is a little girl. It’s half my age. Anywhooo….
The teacher is going through all the details of the year. What their schedule is. How they couldn’t ask for kleenex or hand santizer this year but that they really need it. And then she says…
“The kids can have cell phone but if I see them I have to send them home.”
A second grader who is in school needs a cell phone??? Heck I didn’t get one until I was in my 30s…but an 7-8 year needs one???
What has the world come to? I thought she was suppose to be focusing on her studies. My kid does not need a cell phone at school. Geepers!
What do you think?

This is completely overboard. I live in an area where you could definitely call a good amount of the kids privileged. And a few have cell phones at my daughters age.
My husband and I have both decided there will be no cell phones for the kids until they reach an age that they will be out somewhere without adult supervision and could have to get in touch with us for some reason. We are talking well into teen years.
I wasn’t allowed to get a cell phone until I was 16,when I was capable of driving and getting into all sorts of trouble that would require my parents to check up on me.
I don’t have any children (yet) but I do not plan on including a cell phone in my second grader’s school supplies. The fact that she even had to say that is just ridiculous…do THAT many kids really have cell phones at that age? What the heck?
Cabin Fever in Vermont
Don’t worry about the teacher being new, many young teachers still have spunk, creativity, and fresh ideas because the system hasn’t beaten it out of them yet. I was once teaching my 3rd grade class when I heard a cell phone ringing from one of my students desks,I picked it up and it was her MOTHER. Don’t you think she’d know her daughter was in class?! We have a strict no cell phone policy.
My daughter will have one in her backpack. A pay as you go type phone for emergencies. My step-children had their school evacuated for bomb threats in WINTER waiting for buses outside twice –when one of us could easily have picked them up.
I know family members who have cellphones for their kids who are in the same age/grade. I think it’s absolutely crazy.
It is becoming more and more popular. My husband teaches 12 year olds and literally every child has one. People used to get their kids a phone when the could drive just a couple of years ago but now the popular age is 8. Kind of scary.
I kinda understand kids having a cell phone –it does make it convenient to reach a parent in certain circumstances. But I mean REALLY? a cell phone in school? who they calling? all their friends should be in school. my 10 year old cousin has a celly for like a year now.
a cell phone,at second grade? NO WAY! My hubby and I have talked about this. the absolute earliest our girls will get a cell phone is 13 …at the earliest!
Totally nuts! No second grader needs a cell phone. But I know far too many overindulgent parents who buy them for their completely spoiled children.
I can’t imagine a young child having a cell phone. as far as the teacher,is there a rule for no cell phone?
I think this is just something standard she has to go over with her rules. Many schools nowdays have SO many problems with students (yes! as young as second grade!) having cell phones in class. It’s become standard that all schools (all grades) have some sort of rule about cell phones. Insane? Yes! Uncommon? No!
My kids are home schooled so its a non-issue for us,but I really think its ridiculous for a kid to have a phone at school at any age. The school office does still have phones even these days and kids need to be free from as many distractions as possible. Even in college phones better be turned off in class. It is possible that there could be extenuating family circumstances in a few cases.
For the most part, young kids who have cell phones only have them for ‘show’and it’s annoying. Like they’re all that because they have one and parents buy into the hype of ‘looking cool’. They want to look like the cool parent.
On the other hand,my nephew who will be 10 next month just got a cell phone for this reason:He will no longer go to daycare after school anymore. I will be picking him up,but I can’t get to his house until about 45 minutes after his school gets out since I have to pick up my daughter at the same time. So,he has to walk to school and walk home from school and my sister wanted him to have the phone to call her when he got to school and have it in case there was an emergency or he needed help when he was walking home. For safety reasons,I think they are great. Him having one has helped my sister be not so terrified that he will be walking to and home from school alone.
Are you kidding me,that is too young! I would also make sure that they have sanitizer &kleenex.
