Wordless Wednesday –A tribute

This is my grandma.  She passed away many years ago.  As a child of 7 to 9,I couldn’t wait until she came to visit us.  We lived out in the country.  Now when I say the country.. I mean the country.. the kind that the kids are out catching crawdads, chasing pigs (yes yes to catch them so that we were out of trouble),riding horses that we shouldn’t have been on,washing machines on the front porch, etc.

Little was I too know that she would eventually offer her house to my father to live in.  She was getting older and thought a little apartment would be better for her.  We moved into her ranch house when I was 9 years old.  I was later to find out that my grandma was worried about our education.  Where we lived the schools weren’t the best but they were where she lived.  She was an amazing woman.  One that I truly wish I had been able to get to know even better but as a child you weren’t like that.  I miss her dearly today.

She lived in her nice apartment until I was a teenager I think.  Honestly I don’t remember when she moved in but my dad added an addition on to the house so that he could take care of her.  Actually in actual fact so that my mother could take care of her.  She was an alcoholic by then.  I remember how mom would be working and my grandmother would sneak off to get her gin. (I think it was gin.)  I was a kid what do I know.  The drinking led to diabetes and then to alzheimers.

This kind woman went from being the talk of town to someone you didn’t know.  She was a teacher by trait.  She was a writer.  She took me to Sunday school when dad and mom allowed it.  She was an amazing woman and I loved her.  When I was trying to lose weight and doing aerobics, she would sneak in to watch me.  I heard her giggling behind me.  I miss that giggle.

Happy Birthday,Grandma.  I love you.
